The Fab Five: Valentine’s Day Cocktails

Finding the perfect cocktail is like finding true love; it requires a lot of persistence and leaves you a bit woozy at the end.

So why not combine the two? Valentine’s Day is a great time to experiment with cocktails – there’s no better time than with your Valentine to try out some new drinks.

We can’t point to one dreamy drink as the template for all Valentine’s Day dinners. Rather, we wanted to spread the love around to what we think are the Top 5 Best Drink ideas for Valentine’s Day.

For your bubbly Valentine: Sparkling Long Island Iced Tea (adapted from the Twist n’ Sparkle)

Inspired both by New York and our upcoming in-store demo of the Twist n’ Sparkle system, the Long Island Iced Tea is a drink known historically for it’s combination of potency and flavor. True-to-form, the only ingredients are spirits and a bit of soda!

1/2 cup Tequila
1/2 cup dark Rum
1/2 cup Vodka
1/2 cup Gin
1/2 cup Triple sec

1/2 cup cola
2 tablespoons lime syrup

To prepare: Combine ingredients in the Twist n’ Sparkle bottle and carbonate using one iSi Sparklets soda charger. Wait one minute, then release. Serve over ice.

Side note: The Twist n’ Sparkle, which we’re demoing this Saturday, is an awesome tool that significantly expands on the capabilities of the traditional home soda maker. Whereas most home soda makers can only carbonate water, the Twist n’ Sparkle can do absolutely any liquid, though cold liquids work best. Simply insert the carbonater into the bottle, pop a CO2 cartridge in, twist the wand and voila! A sparkling drink in under a minute.

For your choco-holic Valentine: Bakon Chocolate Martini (recipe courtesy of Bakon Vodka)

Valentine’s Day is practically synonymous with chocolate. However, we didn’t feel right just seeking out a basic cookie-cutter chocolate martini recipe. And while we are somewhat tired of the “Bacon Everything” trend, this was too much to resist, especially with that luxurious salty/sweet combo. We only have one thing to add to the recipe – a garnish of, you guessed it, one bacon strip.

Makes one serving.
1 part Bakon Vodka
1 part chocolate liqueur
A splash of cream

Combine in a cocktail shaker and shake with ice. Strain and pour into a sugar-rimmed martini glass.


For your Valentine with a flair for showmanship: Wild Hibiscus Royale (originally served at Dorchester Hotel, London)

Representative of it’s swanky name, this classy cocktail is not just tasty – it comes with a bit of theater, too! Over the course of three or four minutes, the flower will gradually bloom in the glass as the petals are pushed open by the champagne. It is exactly as cool as it sounds.

Makes one serving.

Wild Hibiscus Flower GarnishWild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup
1/4 oz natural rose water
2/3 oz Wild Hibiscus Syrup

Muddle mint in the champagne flute and discard (squash
some leaves around inside the glass)

Place Wild Hibiscus Flower in bottom of glass & stand

Add rose water & some bruised torn mint pieces

Top with champagne

Finally, pour in the Hibiscus syrup, which will graduate
from crimson at the bottom to light pink at the top

One quick tip: pour the syrup in first for a layered effect.


For your classic Valentine: The Classic Gin Martini

There’s a reason James Bond favored the martini (though apparently he slightly favored vodka to gin, by a 19 to 16 count). This classic bar cocktail is a symbol of refinement. Why’d we pick the gin version? Because… we’re kitchen suppliers, not secret agents. (Or are we?? Yes, we are.)

A basic (one-serving) recipe includes two ounces of gin, a splash of dry vermouth, and ice. Serve straight up or on the rocks, with an olive or a citrus twist. Variations of this recipe can be found online or, of course, at your local bar.

Also, measuring specific amounts, which is important for small batch cocktails, can be easily accomplished by using shot-measures or similar tools.


For your anti-Valentine: Dutch Negroni

While Valentine’s Day is meant to recognize the love between two people, one must remember the population that uses the day to celebrate the solidarity of single folk. The best drink to encapsulate those feelings? Obviously, you’ll want something with bitters.

The Dutch Negroni marries the aromatic bitters with the flowery juniper flavor imparted by the gin, thus making this the perfect drink to either drown your sorrows or celebrate single-dom!

1.5 oz Gin
1 oz Campari (bitters)

1 oz sweet vermouth

Stir all ingredients with ice, strain into a pre-chilled rocks glass. Garnish with a large orange zest.
